Cockington Village and Country Park: A Picturesque Escape

Nestled less than a mile inland between Torquay and Paignton, Cockington Village and Country Park is a charming destination that transports visitors to a bygone era. Easily accessible, Cockington can be approached on foot from the coast road via Cockington water meadows or from the No.62 bus from Torquay harbour.

Listed in the Doomsday book, the village is famous for its quintessential thatched cottages, offering a snapshot of traditional English village life.

At the heart of Cockington village is the thatched Drum Inn, which was designed by Edwin Lutyens himself. It offers the perfect spot to relax after exploring the village and park, and has a large beer garden as well as extensive indoor seating.

Alternatively, traditional tea rooms offer the quintessential Devon Cream Tea—scones topped with clotted cream and jam on top; the Devon way, paired with a pot of tea. Delicious!

Craft lovers will adore Cockington Craft Centre, where local artisans can be seen creating special pieces by hand and are always happy to chat about their work. It’s a perfect place to find a unique souvenir or simply to enjoy the area’s creativity.

Possibly the oldest church in Devon, Cockington Church (officially named St George and St Mary) has been welcoming worshippers for over 950 years. Nearly always open to visitors, do step inside to appreciate this lovely church for yourself.

The approximately 450-acre Country Park offers visitors the chance to kick back and enjoy nature. Don’t miss the walled rose garden in full bloom during the warmer months, a stunning arboretum showcasing a variety of trees, and large lawned areas perfect for picnics, walking the dogs or for a run around with the kids.

Best of all, Cockington Village and Country Park offers free access, making it a perfect destination for a day out without any entry fees.
